OEM vs. ODM Jewelry Manufacturing

The terms are used inconsistently across suppliers, so focus on who creates the design, who owns the specification, and how much customization is involved.

Why the terms can be confusing

OEM and ODM are used differently by different suppliers. Avoid making the acronym itself the contract: define the actual design, manufacturing and ownership responsibilities.

OEM-style projects

In a typical OEM-style relationship, the buyer brings a design/specification and the manufacturer produces to it. Clarify engineering changes and file ownership.

ODM-style projects

In a typical ODM-style relationship, the supplier contributes an existing or supplier-developed design platform that a buyer may adapt or brand.

Choose by control and speed

Original product control generally requires more specification work; adapting an existing design can shorten development. Compare the actual supplier process rather than relying on labels.
